Do You Run on Adrenalin?
You basically have two stress hormones: Adrenalin and cortisol. Adrenalin (epinephrine) is responsible for the “fight or flight reaction,” and basically increases your body’s capacity to perform vigorous muscle activity. Cortisol is a steroid hormone secreted by the outer portion of your adrenal glands, and increases the use of glucose your brain’s primary food.
A little bit of stress is actually a good thing.
It keeps you on your toes, boosts your immune system strong, and improves your reaction time. But stress becomes a problem if you get “hooked” on the hormones that are released when you chronically operate under stress.
As a result stress-related tension builds – and WILL have a negative impact on your health. When this happens, some people become irritable … others feel depressed and unable to cope … many can no longer think clearly … and many tend to gain (or lose) weight. Ongoing stress also makes you more susceptible to colds, flu, and other illnesses.
Do you tend to depend on pumping a steady stream of stress hormones  to keep yourself motivated and productive?
Take this self-test to help you identify if you might be over-adrenalized. Just answer yes or no to each question – then add up your yes’es and no’s.
Take the SELF TEST
1 Do you hurry, or rush from one thing or place to the next?
2 Typically do you often find yourself working intensely to complete something that seems urgent?
3 Do you often tackle two or three things at once (multi-task) in an attempt to be more efficient?
4 Are you busy or active almost all the time?
5 Do you regularly rely on caffeine or other stimulants to feel energetic and focused?
6 Do you play loud music when driving or relaxing?
7 When you’re not doing something do you often pace, drum your fingers, tap your feet, shake your foot.
8 Do you feel guilty or restless when you are idle?
9 Do you become impatient or uncomfortably if you are waiting for someone or something?
10 Do you tend to chew your foot very fast, or incompletely?
11 Do you tend to feel bored when you go on vacation or take time away from work?
12 Do you often have physical symptoms such as: gastric distress, rapid heartbeat, headaches, muscle pain, teeth grinding at night, or sleep problems?
YOUR SCORE: If you answered Yes to four or more items, you are probably depending on adrenaline and related hormones like cortisol to pump up your daily life. The problem? Sooner or later this WILL become chronic (these hormones are truly addictive), and your health and productivity will start to slide.
Consider adding some creative stress management to your life, and you’ll do far more than reduce your stress levels – you’ll find yourself reaching new levels of happiness and personal achievement.
